I’ve been photographing racing since junior high school; my favorite way to go to the track is as a photographer. Even though I am working and always have a specific goal of photos to get for the current session, I’m always watching the story as well. There’s simply no better place to feel the race than at the side of the track.

Working alongside photographers with much more experience, I’ve tired to bring my other interests to bear on my motor sports images to produce photographs that are unlike anyone else’s. Shooting landscapes has helped me to find places on track where I am all alone rather than elbow to elbow with other shooters, and to put racing into context with a sense of place.

This year my opportunities to photograph MotoGP, AMA and other racing events have taken me across the U.S., to Europe, and as far away as Qatar. Each location has presented new challenges, such as shooting in rain storms, or at night, or at night during a rain storm.

Racing photography has also led to the very rewarding experience of getting involved with Riders for Health, a charity that provides motorcycles, parts, and training in riding and maintenance to health care agencies in Africa. The vast country has many remote areas that are inaccessible by car, but Riders helps doctors and other health care workers reach people who otherwise would quite literally die from easily preventable diseases.

Making racing photography into a business has been very challenging, but some of my favorite photographs have happened at the track, and I’ve been grateful for each opportunity to take them.

Sometimes a still image shows you something you didn’t see very well at full speed, like the blue flame of racing fuel escaping for a split second.

While I like a good knee-down shot as much as the next person…

… I also enjoy taking pleasing photographs that sadly will never make it into editorial use.

And every now and then I catch a bit of history in a photo that’s particularly pleasing to me.

For all those reasons and a few more, I’m available for specific racing events by the day/session, and my growing library of racing photographs is at your disposal for reasonable usage fees. For more examples of my racing photography, please visit: www.turn2photography.com
